The Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA was named in memory of a woman who began a small shelter out of her home. Ruth was dedicated to helping as many animals as possible, at her own expense. After her death, the shelter was named after her to honor her dedication to animals in need. Many people had the mistaken impression that Ruth left monetary resources to fund the shelter; however, her only legacy was the drive to continue her work. Although no current shelter staff or volunteer knew Ruth Steinert personally, on a daily basis they embrace her mission to help homeless animals. Like all animal welfare organizations, they regularly face uphill battles, but this shelter faces some unique challenges.

  We are a nonprofit no kill shelter dedicated to improving the lives of the homeless animals of Schuylkill County.
We survive  solely  on donations and the kindness of the people in the area we serve.

We provide many services including but not limited to: stray dog pick up in Schuylkill County,  have live traps for rent, sell county dog licenses, offer lost and found services, and animal cruelty investigations.

We are always looking for people to volunteer at our shelter.  If you are interested in volunteering at our shelter, please call the shelter for more information.  We not only need help with the animals but we can also use help with fundraising!

Please go through our site to see our many animals that are looking for their forever homes.  Also we have a page for upcomming events.

Our new hours of operation are as follows for adoptions:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10am-5 pm

Wednesday 3pm-8pm

Saturday and Sunday 10am-3 pm

If you want to surrender your own pet, YOU MUST CALL THE SHELTER FIRST to make sure we have room available.  THERE IS A CHARGE FOR OWNER SURRENDER PETS.

Mission Statement:

Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA's mission as a no kill shelter is to protect the welfare of all domestic animals and promote the humane treatment and well being of these animals by the following:

    • Providing shelter and medical care for stray, abandoned and unwanted animals in Schuylkill County Pennsylvania
    • Responding with personal commitment, humane sensitivity, and compassion to the needs of these animals;
    • Actively promoting suitable adoptions of these animals;
    • Encouraging the spay and neutering of dogs and cats to prevent further pet overpopulation
The animals in our care are never euthanized merely because we lack space or because the animal’s stay with us has exceeded a predefined amount of time
We support the newest bill that is being introduced into legislation to prevent dogs from spending their entire life tied out by a tether.  Please take the time to visit this site and sign the petition, write to your congressman.  Lets help end animals spending their life tied outside and forgotten!
